Veterans Day was originally called “Armistice Day.” It began on Nov. 11, 1919 as the first anniversary of the end of World War I. It became a national holiday in 1938. Veterans Day is a time to honor all American veterans, living or dead, but is a time to especially give thanks to living veterans that have served their country honorably. This day is not just for those that have served during wartime, but also for all those that have served during peacetime as well.

In 1971 the celebration of Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday in October by the Uniform holidays Bill that was passed in 1968. In 1975 President Ford returned the celebration of Veterans Day to November 11 due to the historical significance The law went into effect in 1971, but in 1975 President Ford returned Veterans Day to November 11, due to the important historical significance of the date.

The US is not the only country to celebrate Veterans Day. Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate the veterans of World Wars I and II on or near November 11th. In Europe, Britain and the Commonwealth countries it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11.

Please take a moment to remember and thank a Veteran for their service and sacrifice.
